The Federal University of Bahia Press (Edufba) promotes and disseminates the scientific, artistic and cultural production of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), publishing both original works and reissues of classic works, with the approval of the Editorial Board. It meets the demands of the University’s academic and scientific communities by developing new collections and expanding traditional collections. It also signs agreements with other organisations to carry out certain productions. Edufba also carries out work on private demand, based on the interest of independent authors. 3y334a
Edufba has already published more than 2,500 titles in the various thematic areas and has two bookshops of its own, where it sells not only its own production but also that of 60 other institutions and some private presses from all over Brazil. Edufba also takes part in events, congresses, book biennials and other events, as well as organising its own events, such as the Book and Author Festivals, in which it promotes collective book launches. The Press also launches calls for book publications. The last one took place in December 2018; in honour of Suzana Alice Cardoso, the call for proposals included original works in three categories: printed book, e-book and book for the Dramaturgy Collection.
In line with its policy of promoting open access to scientific information and equal access to knowledge, some time after its launch the Press made its titles available for free on the UFBA Institutional Repository website, a system geared towards open access to scientific and academic productions.
The use of social networks to publicise Edufba’s publications, especially those in open access, enables a closer dialogue with the target audience. Edufba is the Brazilian university press with the largest number of followers on Instagram: more than 15,000 people follow the @edufba profile.
In 2018, Edufba launched the Bora Ler Reading Incentive Programme in partnership with the UFBA Rectory. The programme consists of spreading books around UFBA campuses for students to find. In 2019, the initiative was modernised and, as well as physical books, QR Codes were scattered around, giving those who found them a gift of books, UFBA notepads or discounts on Edufba books. This is a pioneering initiative among Brazilian university presses.
